We’ve had some steamy hot weather recently and while no one is entirely sure of how long it could continue for, there is no doubt it pays to try and keep cool when you go to bed at night.
If you share a double bed with someone else it is even more important to stay as cool as you can. There will be twice the amount of body heat there and even having someone close to you can be unbearable when the heat doesn’t dissipate to give a cool evening.
Luckily there are some things you can do to make your double bed feel more comfortable in the hot weather. For starters strip off the bottom sheet and add a protective sheet underneath it. These are sometimes quilted but they will protect your mattress from being damaged if it is hot enough at night to make you sweat. Change your bottom sheet and the protective cover every few days. If you can wash them first thing you can have them back on the bed long before night time.
Another good thing to do is to leave the duvet off the bed altogether. Try sleeping under a sheet instead – it keeps you cooler and means you will be able to sleep better as well. During the day make sure you fold down your bedding to let the bottom sheet air a bit. It will also be cooler to lie down on.
You might want to get rid of a pillow or two at night as well if you normally sleep with a couple of them. One tends to allow more air flow round your head and you will find it much more comfortable to get along with.
Generally speaking it is better to change your bedding more frequently than you would normally when it is hot. Even if you have a fan going all night you will still feel sticky and this makes the bedding feel uncomfortable as well.
Put simply there are a few things you can do to make you feel better and get a better night’s sleep during the hot weather. All of these things will help to protect your mattress as well, so each step will help your bed as well as you. And finally don’t forget to turn your mattress often if you have one that is designed to be turned. It’s another good way of keeping it fresh.
